Spirit Rooms was founded by Katri Walker and Hardey Martínez in January 2026, the next chapter in a years-long journey shaped by enthusiasm, curiosity and a shared passion for spirits and hospitality.

Hardey founded Gente de Mezcal in 2014, a house dedicated to producing small-batch mezcal of the highest quality. Years of dedication and love for the essence of mezcal have led him to build an agave cultivation and preservation programme, develop his own production line, and create a scaled commercial model that balances the preservation of traditional values with the growth of the industry. His mezcals have been awarded Gold and Double Gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition — a reflection of his ongoing commitment to excellence and to mezcal culture itself.

In 2019, Katri and Hardey opened Salón Rosario, a space for private events, tastings, dinners and experiences in the Roma Norte neighbourhood of Mexico City. Two years later, in 2021, they brought The Scotch Malt Whisky Society to Mexico from Katri’s hometown of Edinburgh, Scotland. Salón Rosario became the heart of SMWS Mexico, the Society’s first International Partner Bar in Latin America, hosting monthly tastings where guests could discover unique whiskies bottled straight from the cask — undiluted, unfiltered, natural colour, full-strength and singular. After five wonderful years, the space closed its doors at the end of 2025 to make way for new ideas and new projects… Spirit Rooms.

Beyond SMWS Mexico, Katri and Hardey import and represent a carefully curated portfolio of independent distilleries and bottlers through their parent company, Sr. León Artisanal World Spirits.

For our name, we took inspiration from nineteenth-century “Spirit Rooms” — domestic spaces created for listening, ritual, and mediation. These were places where people gathered to communicate with spirits in the paranormal sense. Spaces for pausing and paying attention.

We also love a good word play so the double meaning of spirit suits us perfectly; something between the intangible and the palpable. We’ve put our own twist on history to create a place where everyone can take the time and space to let our spirits reveal their secrets, to understand the character of each distillate through mindful tasting, and to treat the experience as an opportunity for conversation and discovery.
